Thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Teklemariam Tarekegn, especially those who continue to work in Amhara, during this difficult time.

A Plan International staff member, Teklemariam Tarekegn, has been killed in Ethiopia while travelling from his home in Motta to Bahir Dar on Sunday, 29th September.

Teklemariam was working as a Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer for Plan International’s Ethiopian Humanitarian Fund project in the Amhara region. He was taken from a minibus in Debre Mewi and killed alongside two other civilians.

A spokesperson for Plan International said: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of our colleague Teklemariam Tarekegn in Amhara, Ethiopia, while travelling to work. We condemn this attack on a humanitarian worker, alongside two civilians, in the strongest possible terms. This devastating incident underscores the unacceptable dangers that humanitarian workers face in conflict areas. We call for stronger protection for civilians and humanitarian workers, who should be able to serve their communities safely.

“We stand in solidarity with his loved ones and all those affected by this and previous tragedies. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues, especially those who continue to work in Amhara, during this incredibly difficult time. We remain in close contact with his family to offer our support.”

The attack comes amid a sharp rise in the number of humanitarians killed around the world. Plan International continues to call for all parties to conflict to respect International Humanitarian law, including taking all measures available to ensure humanitarian workers are not targeted or caught in hostilities.
