Children's Participation in Decision-Making

Children's Participation in Decision Making: Why Do It, When To Do It, How To Do It

The aim of this booklet is to show how to put children’s participation into practice. It is aimed at everyone in roles of public leadership and service, answering questions about how and when children’s participation is needed.

Chapters cover definitions and concepts of children’s participation, including relevant articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC); why children’s participation is important; when to introduce it, including useful checklists on justice, health, education, community services and information, as well as key entry points; how public leaders, such as legislators, administrators and the media, can play a role in promoting and improving it; how to make children’s participation effective, with case studies from India and Brazil; and where to find other useful resources online.
