The campaign
Get ready to take part in our 'hands up for girls' photo petition
Because I am a Girl is Plan's campaign to fight gender inequality, promote girls' rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty.
Across the world, girls face double discrimination due to their gender and age, leaving them at the bottom of the social ladder.
Girls are less likely to go to school or have access to medical care, and are more likely to be deprived of food. They experience more violence and sexual harassment and are forced to work hard on domestic chores, limiting their opportunities to develop.
Education key
Educating girls is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving the lives of girls, boys and everyone in their communities.
Our goal is that by 2015, 4 million girls will have access to schools, skills, services, livelihood and protection. Will you help us?
Hands up for girls!
Shortly we'll be launching 'hands up for girls' - a photo petition of 4 million people with their hands raised to show they believe girls deserve to be educated.
The petition will be delivered to the United Nations as part of the global launch of Because I am a Girl on October 11 - the first International Day of the Girl Child.
Girl reports
Plan is producing one girl report each year in the run up to 2015, the target year for the Millennium Development Goals. Each report provides tangible proof of the inequalities that still exist between boys and girls.
Join our campaign and help us transform the lives of the world's poorest girls.
Because I am a Girl is brought to you by Plan - a leading children's organisation working in over 60 countries to improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.
