Culturally Diverse Schools

Challenges and needs stemming from the arrival of Ukrainian students

This report is based on over 100 interviews conducted in six schools – elementary and above-elementary, hosting refugee students from Ukraine.

This research report was conducted by one of Plan International’s education partners in Poland, the Centre for Civic Education (CEO in its Polish acronym), in July 2022, with Plan International funding.

The research involved qualitative researchers spending 14 days in schools, where they worked with over 150 respondents including school principals, teachers, school psychologists, Polish and Ukrainian students and parents, non-pedagogical staff and NGO actors. Methods included over 100 interviews, observations and 6 case studies.

The recommendations cover all aspects of school life – pedagogical, social, emotional, cultural – and have contributed directly to CEO’s ongoing support to teachers and head teachers in the refugee response. This includes the development of an Education Integration Model that CEO is now applying across its work. It is particularly important that the research recommendations and the model highlight the importance of addressing the learning and wellbeing needs of all learners and their families – refugee and Polish – in order to work towards the continuation of quality education for all.
