Because I am a Girl

A year of action and innovation

This report tracks the achievements and global impact of Plan International’s Because I am a Girl campaign in the year following its launch on the International Day of the Girl Child, 11 October 2012.

Because I am a Girl is Plan International’s initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty.

The report collects together evidence, analysis and stories of what is happening on the ground from across the world. It finds, among many other highlights, that Because I am a Girl has worked with 20 million girls around the world in its first year, has received high-level government support from 22 countries and achieved results on girls’ secondary education in 27 countries.

The data gathered here shows the campaign has made a strong start towards its goal of empowering 4 million girls around the world to enjoy their rights by 2016.
