Political instability in Niger puts children at risk

As political instability in Niger continues to impact vulnerable children and families, we are working around the clock to ensure our food, child protection and education programmes can continue to run smoothly.

Nahiou Hima, Acting Country Director for Plan International Niger said:

“The political instability in Niger comes at a time when humanitarian needs were already vast, in a country where armed conflict has been ongoing since 2015, with hunger escalating as a result of this insecurity and compounded by climate change. As of January, this year, more than 645,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, and across the country as a whole, 4.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

“Plan International’s priority right now is to continue delivering life-saving aid to the most vulnerable children and their families. We are working around the clock to ensure our food, child protection and education programmes can continue to run smoothly.

“It is critical that all stakeholders play their part in ensuring humanitarian organisations can continue their essential work and that humanitarian principles are respected at all times. We call on all stakeholders to facilitate humanitarian access inside Niger and also across the borders to ensure that key humanitarian aid can reach the population in need.”
