29 August 2104: View the slideshow and see how more than 200 children affected by the earthquake in China’s Yunnan Province now have safe spaces to play, learn and develop thanks to Plan’s emergency response.
The 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 3 August caused widespread devastation – destroying houses, killing hundreds of people and leaving thousands injured.
Vital support
Plan has been providing emergency aid and support to communities hit by the disaster – including setting up child-friendly spaces, which provide a secure place for children to get together and recover from their experiences.
Many children have witnessed shocking scenes and the child-friendly spaces help them to relax and cope with emotional distress.
Games and learning
In addition to providing games and running learning activities, Plan staff and volunteers have also distributed infant kits to over 100 families with children under 1 year of age.
Information on breastfeeding, complementary feeding and early education has also been shared with new parents.
Wang Ling is thrilled to receive her infant kit. She is now living in a tent after her house collapsed with her 10-month-old baby daughter inside it.
Fortunately her baby was unharmed but they now face an uncertain future. All of their clothes and furniture were buried under the rubble.
“I am worried about where to go and especially now the days are getting colder and colder,” she says.
