What we do
Plan Brazil’s work covers 5 core areas:
- promoting rights
- early childhood health
- learning
- community participation
- sustainable livelihoods
Currently we are implementing close to 50 projects within these areas.
Promoting the rights of children and adolescents
These activities are aimed at the protection of children and adolescents and prepare them to become active citizens so that they can defend their rights and lead their own development.
We help adolescents to improve the quality of life for their families and communities and to influence social policies that affect them. Youths learn values such as solidarity, respect for others and democratic participation.
Early childhood health
Early childhood is a critical period for ensuring a child’s healthy development. This programme supports the proper development of children from 0-6 years old, so that they can live a healthy life, with families and communities who protect them and respect their rights.
This work focuses on sharing information and improving the quality of health services. It also addresses sexual and reproductive health for mothers.
Learning for an active and healthy life
Using a methodology created and applied worldwide by Plan, we encourage the active involvement of children and their parents in all decision-making to ensure quality education.
The programme also addresses the health of adolescents, with emphasis on the prevention of HIV and AIDS.
Communities conducting their own development
People need to believe in their capacity to make change happen. Plan works to increase the self-esteem of community members, motivate them and provide them with power and the means to lead their own development.
This programme emphasises the active participation of children and adolescents in their communities.
Sustainable livelihoods
Plan helps communities to become more aware about healthy food and the environment and shows them how to develop organic agriculture in their own backyards. We also create cooperatives for selective collection and recycling of garbage.
In the neediest areas, Plan helps communities to access and utilise appropriate water and sanitation technologies. Another important aspect of this programme is preparing staff, communities and partners to confront emergencies and disasters, through the formation of cooperative structures and mutual assistance networks.
