More than 475,000 people - half of them children - have fled fighting in northern Mali and are now scattered across 6 countries.

Plan emergency teams, which are already helping thousands of people displaced by fighting in early 2012, are now providing vital aid to new arrivals - including food, school kits and lessons for pupils, safe water and sanitation, as well as psychological support and protection for children.

Urgent appeal for help

The move is just part of Plan's response to the complex emergency in the Sahel region of West Africa, where erratic rains and an attack of pests destroyed entire harvests in 2011 - leaving millions of people with nothing to eat.

Plan has targeted hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children and adults with emergency food aid in some of the worst hit areas of Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Cameroon and Senegal.

We are now appealing for US$25 million to help displaced children from Mali, as our response to the Sahel emergency continues to grow.
