Youth Leadership in Climate Policy Workbook and Facilitator’s Guide

Youth Leadership in Climate Policy Workbook and Facilitator’s Guide

The Youth Leadership in Climate Policy Workbook and Facilitator’s Guide strengthens young people’s knowledge and skills so they can engage in climate policy.

A recent Plan International global climate change survey found that young people are very concerned about climate change and yet are often not taught how to engage in climate policy processes. Many don’t know about the Paris Agreement or how to get involved in climate processes in their country. This prevents their voices from being heard.

The Youth Leadership in Climate Policy Workbook and Facilitator’s Guide aims to address this gap and strengthen young people’s knowledge and skills so they can engage in climate policy.

Climate empowerment for young people

It provides targeted content and activities that help learners turn their knowledge and skills into action for climate empowerment. The tools aim to support young people in accessing climate decision-making spaces and groups, and to think critically about their own country’s mitigation and adaptation priorities through a rights-based lens.

The concepts of climate justice, equity, and fairness are integrated throughout the content and activities in the workbook. Each activity asks learners to closely consider the barriers to participation and inclusion that vulnerable and historically marginalised groups may experience in climate policy processes.

Supporting young people’s climate action

Activities include developing and presenting your own version of your country’s Nationally Determined Contribution; conducting a stakeholder mapping of climate actors; and preparing your own Climate Policy Action Plan.

The Workbook is aimed at young people aged 14 and above and can be used independently, in a larger group in a school setting or a youth group with support from the facilitator’s guide. The facilitator’s guide provides additional details on how the workbook content and activities can be delivered in group settings, and how learners can be further supported while engaging with these complex and sometimes stressful topics.

The workbook also available in greyscale to support printing. Please email jessica.cooke@plan-international.org for more details.
