At least 17 children killed as violence escalates in Sudan’s North Darfur

13 October 2025

In response to recent drone strikes in El Fasher, North Darfur, which have killed dozens of people sheltering in a displacement centre, Plan International Sudan’s Country Director Mohammed Kamal said:

“We are devastated by the killing of at least 17 children over the weekend — among them a newborn baby. Reports of drone and shelling attacks striking shelters which should be a place of safety are deeply distressing, and they highlight once again the unbearable toll the conflict in Sudan is taking on civilians.”

“Civilian lives must be protected at all times. Places of refuge such as displacement centres, schools and homes must never become battlefields. We urgently call on all parties to the conflict to uphold International Humanitarian Law.

“As we speak, close to around 700,000 civilians — mostly children and women — are currently trapped under the besieged city of Al Fasher, cut off from food and medicine whilst bombing continues. All parties must immediately allow aid to reach those in need and enable civilians to move to safety.”

“Despite severe constraints, Plan International is scaling up its humanitarian response. This week, our teams are resuming aid convoys into Darfur, delivering 200 metric tons of food and essential supplies. We are also preparing to join convoys led by the United Nations to reach other besieged cities in South Kordofan that have been cut off from aid for over a year.”

“Across the region, more than 4 million people have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, and this number rises every day. Plan International is committed to supporting affected children and families wherever they are — whether displaced within Sudan or seeking refuge in Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and beyond.”
