Haiti: 6000 people on brink of famine

30 September 2024

The IPC's latest report on Haiti has found that 6,000 people are classed as being in IPC Phase 5.

Responding to the IPC’s latest report on Haiti, which found that 6,000 people are now a step away from famine and classified as being in IPC Phase 5, Johnson Bien-Aime, Country Director for Plan International in Haiti, said:

“Children should never face famine. Yet today, over 5.4 million people in Haiti are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, with children bearing the brunt of this catastrophe.

Families are being forced to make impossible choices—many parents are skipping meals entirely so their children can eat, but even these sacrifices are no longer enough.

The situation is critical, and without immediate action, more lives will be tragically lost. This crisis was completely preventable, and there is still time to save lives if the international community acts now.

Plan International has been working tirelessly on hunger in Haiti since July 2022, delivering food, nutritional support, and protecting children in these dire circumstances.

But we cannot do this alone. We urgently need the international community to step up—provide the funding, ensure humanitarian access, and prevent further suffering. The time to act is now – there is a high chance that children will die from hunger if we don’t act promptly.”
