Stories of Change
This publication showcases the inspiring success stories from the Girls Get Equal: Preventing Child, Early, and Forced Marriage project (2020–2024), which has empowered communities in Bardiya, Kalikot, and Jumla districts while transforming lives by tackling the root causes of child, early, and forced marriages.
This document presents a compilation of success stories showcasing the initiatives and impacts of the Girls Get Equal: Preventing Child, Early, and Forced Marriage project, implemented from 2020 to 2024.
The publication features observational narratives and interviews with key stakeholders (youth, local government, teachers, community leaders, media, etc) and project participants. The project’s primary goal was to reduce the prevalence of Child, Early, and Forced Marriages (CEFM) in Bardiya, Kalikot, and Jumla districts of Nepal. It employed a holistic approach to empower adolescent girls and boys to safeguard themselves and make informed decisions about their futures. This was achieved through targeted efforts in education, economic empowerment, life skills development, and improved understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
In addition, the project supported families with children at high risk of CEFM by enhancing their income-generating capacities, thereby enabling them to avoid early marriages. It also tackles the underlying causes of CEFM by mobilising communities to embrace values that prioritise girls and encourage delayed marriages for both girls and boys.
The project further advocated for strengthening and implementing laws and policies related to child protection at the local, provincial, and national levels.
The programme benefitted over 34,822 children, adolescents, and youth, along with 112 schools and 88 communities. Inclusivity has remained central, with disability being systematically mainstreamed throughout the project’s interventions.
All interviews with project participants and stakeholders were conducted in safe spaces, with full consent obtained. For minors, including students and Champions of Change, written consent was secured beforehand, and the interviews were conducted under the supervision of the project team and partner organisations.
