This is the Future Girls Want

What is the future girls want to see? What should change in order to make the world a better place for girls and young women – for everyone?

Body Part, Finger, Hand
Will you listen to the younger generation?

Girls have spoken

To ensure their voices are heard, adolescent girls and young people aged 15-24 from around the world developed the Girls’ Pact for the Future sharing their concerns with the current state of the world, their vision of a positive future with gender equality at its heart, and clear and actionable recommendations for policy makers to achieve gender equality.

Advancing Transformative Actions for Adolescent Girls and Youth

Plan International side event at the Summit of the Future

20 September 2024, 09:00 – 10.30

The UN Summit of the Future is a pivotal moment that presents the opportunity to recalibrate the future of global governance and sustainable development. As we look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that the world will encounter, it is imperative that the needs and perspectives of all demographics, especially adolescent girls and young people, are integrated in the political outcomes of the Summit.

To this end, Plan International and its partners have been advocating during the months leading up to the Summit for Member States to prioritise and commit to 8 Transformative Actions for Adolescent Girls and Young People. These Actions, taken from the revised drafts of the Pact for the Future, have been identified by young people and their allies to be most transformative for adolescent girls and young people. These are based on young people’s vision for a gender-equal future as outlined in the Girls’ Pact for the Future, and their recommendations to achieve it.

This event will seek to present 8 Transformative Actions for adolescent girls and young people – and chart a path for implementing these actions in the months and years following the Summit. Please join us to hear from girls and young people themselves on their priorities and be part of increasing the political momentum and accountability on advancing gender equality and girls’ rights at the Summit and beyond.

This is the future girls want – will world leaders listen?

I am Samikshya, a 19-year-old girl from Nepal. I want to share with you the struggles that adolescent girls like me face.

Despite progress towards the 2030 Agenda, many of us are still being denied our rights, face discrimination, and are underestimated in our potential to be change-makers. With only 12% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on track, and nearly half moderately or severely off track, it’s clear that urgent action is needed.

It’s essential our voices are heard at the Summit of the Future in New York in September. The Pact for the Future (the document governments will agree as a blueprint for future development work) must call out the experiences and accept the demands of girls from across the globe – or it may not be a world in which we can even survive.

The time to act is now.
