25 October 2011: More than 75,000 children and adults remain in shelters due to recent heavy rains and landslides across Central America.

El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have been seriously affected by the passage of Tropical Depression 12-E.  Over 1,000,000 people have now been impacted indirectly.

El Salvador aid

El Salvador, one of the most affected countries, has suffered constant rain for 10 days - causing 34 deaths and forcing 51,600 people from their homes.

Plan has earmarked an initial US$250,000 to provide first response care in the most affected municipalities of La Libertad, San Salvador, Chalatenango, Cabañas and Cuscatlan.

In Guatemala, 478,030 people have been affected by the rains, with 35 dead, 6 missing, and 19 wounded. Some 12,699 people are in shelters and more than 23,000 people have been evacuated.

28 communities where Plan works have been affected and Plan is supporting 55 shelters -  holding 4,840 children and adults - with water filters, hygiene kits, basic food, child protection measures and care for the emotionally distressed.

Plan is actively involved in the coordination of the Humanitarian Network (Human Aid Network) and is focusing its efforts on child protection as well as supporting other institutions and non-governmental organisations working with shelters across the country.

Honduras support

In Honduras, 58,000 people are affected - 10 people have been killed, 12,200 evacuated, and 6,500 are in shelters. Honduras has been under a state of national emergency in the southern region for the past week.

Plan is working in shelters, directly supporting the communities where we work, with personal hygiene kits, medicine and measures to protect children - the most vulnerable in emergencies.

Plan is also currently helping thousands of families caught up in floods across several countries in Asia
