Children with disabilities are entitled to attend school like all other children. However, thousands of children with disabilities in Nepal are deprived of this right. Not only does this reduce their choices in life, but they also have limited opportunities to socialise with other children, making them feel isolated.
Laxmi, 8, has a physical disability in her lower legs and struggles to walk. Instead of being able to go to school, her parents would take her with them to the farmland they tend and she would watch them while they worked.
After receiving an ankle brace from Plan International, Laxmi is now able to walk comfortably and independently. Having a foot brace has increased Laxmi's confidence and she now enjoys attending school every day.
Sudip, 13, was born with multiple disabilities, both intellectual and physical. His father and 16-year-old brother died when their house collapsed on them during the earthquake in April 2015. Sudip, his two elder sisters and mother survived the disaster.
Sudip attended school irregularly when Plan International's community facilitator identified his difficulties with his mobility. We provided him with a wheelchair and gave him training in how to use it at a mobility camp. He is now regularly going to school with support from his family, neighbours and friends. He enjoys English lessons and scores excellent marks in this subject.
Unisha, 4, from Sindhupalchowk district has difficulty walking. When a community facilitator from Plan International travelled to Unisha’s home, she realised that while Unisha was enrolled in school, she was not actually attending classes.
Through the support of Plan International, Unisha received a wheelchair and is now able to move around more freely. She regularly attends her classes and receives assistance from her family and classmates to safely reach her school.
Kamal, 7, is from Sindhupalchowk district in Nepal. His school was destroyed in last year's earthquake and is now undergoing reconstruction. Kamal has a physical disability and received an ankle brace, which has enhanced his mobility and allows him to walk independently.
Kamal's high school has around 1,000 students. Following the earthquake, Plan International constructed temporary learning centres and sanitation facilities so the children could continue their education. Ramps and handrails were included in the reconstruction of the school to make it more accessible to children with disabilities.
Plan International trains teachers, school management committees and parent teacher associations to support children with disabilities. We want to ensure that all children with disabilities have the opportunity to live happy lives and have access to the education they deserve. We believe that every child has a right to go to school and are supporting those who need help to complete their education.
