Amid Nepal’s challenging terrain, where roads are often perilous and uncertainty prevails, Dipraj Rokaya’s dedication to humanitarian work shines brightly. For nearly 6 years, Dipraj has been more than just a driver for Plan International Nepal; he has been a frontline responder, a lifeline for communities in crisis, and a silent hero navigating the chaos of natural disasters.

Based in Surkhet, 32-year-old Dipraj has traversed some of Nepal’s most difficult landscapes, delivering aid and ensuring his team’s safety following devastating events. Whether responding to the landslides in Kalikot and Jumla in 2022 or the earthquakes that struck Bajhang, Jajarkot, and West Rukum in 2023, Dipraj’s presence has been a constant, his commitment steadfast.

“As fate would have it, I was on leave when the landslide hit Kalikot in 2022. Even though I was off duty, I coordinated with the local government and communities to gather all the information needed for our organisation to develop an effective flood response plan.”

Contributing to success in relief distribution

Transporting relief materials and team members to disaster-stricken areas was fraught with challenges. “One of the most difficult situations was during the landslides in Kalikot. The roads were virtually non-existent, and we had to be extremely cautious. There were times when I wasn’t sure if we would make it through. But giving up was never an option. We had to get the supplies to those villages, so I just kept going, making sure we didn’t lose our way or our hope.”

“With 5 drivers based in Surkhet, we operate on a rotational basis, which allows us to respond swiftly to emergencies while also ensuring we look after ourselves. This system helps us stay prepared and rested, so we’re always ready to support those in need.”

Overcoming challenges on the road

Dipraj reflects on his role during the flood and Karnali Earthquake responses: “As a driver, my job was not only to transport the team to the affected areas but also to ensure they arrived safely and on time. In these emergencies, every minute counts. I had to navigate the toughest roads, sometimes driving for hours without a break, to ensure the relief supplies reached those who needed them most.”

“Leaving home for about 14 days to respond to the Bajhang Earthquake was challenging. The hardest part was not being able to communicate with my family to let them know I was safe. But I knew my work was crucial, and I had to remain focused on helping those in need.”

Ensuring safety and timely delivery

Safety and timeliness were always a priority for Dipraj. “In disaster zones, the roads can be as perilous as the disaster itself. I had to be vigilant, regularly checking the vehicle, ensuring we had enough fuel, and keeping communication lines open. The last thing you want is to be stranded in a landslide area with no way to move. I always made sure the vehicle was in top condition, ready to go at a moment’s notice.”

Dipraj feels a profound sense of fulfilment when supporting elderly people and informing them about the relief materials. “In Bajhang, after the earthquake, I encountered an elderly woman who had lost everything. We provided her with some relief supplies, and the gratitude in her eyes is something I’ll never forget. She didn’t say much, but her expression spoke volumes. It’s moments like these that make all the challenges worthwhile.”

Maintaining readiness in emergencies

Dipraj Rokaya also took meticulous care of his vehicle, recognising that reliability was crucial in emergencies. “Regular maintenance checks were essential. I would often stay up late into the night, inspecting the tyres, brakes, and engine, ensuring everything was in perfect order. There was no room for error. The vehicle had to be ready to move at a moment’s notice.”

Dipraj’s experiences demonstrate the resilience, dedication, and humanity that drive Plan International Nepal’s successful emergency responses. His story highlights the unsung heroes who work tirelessly to ensure aid reaches those in need, even in the toughest conditions. Dipraj Rokaya is more than just a driver; he is a humanitarian on wheels, bringing relief to the hardest-hit communities.
