What we do

A class of boys take notes, NepalPlan’s work in Nepal covers 6 core areas, all of which are rooted in the rights of the child:

  • health and nutrition
  • water and environmental sanitation
  • child development and learning
  • household economic security
  • child protection and participation
  • building relationships

Health and nutrition

Plan Nepal works to ensure that all children and women, especially the marginalised and disadvantaged, live in secure, safe and healthy environments.

Specifically, we are working to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates by increasing access to child and maternal health services. For example, we are currently helping to  establish health facilities in rural health posts and hospitals.

Water and environmental sanitation

Plan Nepal, in joint efforts with communities and other agencies, strives to improve access to safe water supplies and environmental sanitation facilities.

For example, we are helping in the construction and upgrade of rural irrigation systems and are training villagers to ensure that their environment is healthy through our Community-Led Total Sanitation programme.

Child development and learning

We seek to ensure that children and adults acquire basic knowledge and life skills so they can realise their potential and develop their communities.

Plan works with district and community-based organisations to provide early childhood care and development, and vocational education.

Household economic security

This programme helps families to provide for their children, be self-sufficient in producing food and income and resilient to economic shocks, such as the loss of a job or a natural disaster.

Plan identifies appropriate candidates for small savings and loans schemes – primarily women, their spouses and youths. We also help disadvantaged families benefit from agroforestry, fisheries, vegetable and goat farming, and provide vocational skills training that can help support rural cooperatives and self-reliant groups.

Child protection and participation

Child protection is central to everything we do. We help to organise campaigns to protect and promote child rights, including the elimination of childhood marriage, child labour and human trafficking, while supporting children affected by conflict and ensuring juvenile justice.

Children have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. We work with children and their communities to identify problems and implement solutions.

Building relationships

Plan builds awareness of issues that affect society and imparts its knowledge and best practices to communities, donors, and government and non-governmental organisations through development education initiatives. For example, we use youth media and arts activities such as radio and street drama, to disseminate the message. Training and workshops are also frequently organised.
