Youth influencer VJ Nana has become Plan International Cambodia's first honorary ambassador to promote girls' leadership across the country.
“I could not see a better candidate than VJ Nana to join hands with us to create role models, especially in leadership, for girls,” says Jan Jaap Kleinrensink, the organisation’s Country Director.
I could not see a better candidate than VJ Nana to join hands with us to create role models, especially in leadership, for girls.
“Plan International Cambodia is enthusiastic to work with her to unlock girls' potential through our #GirlsTakeover initiative, localised as #Me4Me.”
Plan International kick-started its #GirlsTakeover activity in 2016 with over 250 takeovers in more than 50 countries, including Cambodia, to mark the International Day of the Girls on October 11.
Leading figures in political, economic and social spheres stepped aside for girls to take charge and girls became Presidents, Ministers, Mayors, CEOs, School and Clinic Directors, TV presenters, and beyond for a day to raise their voices for justice and equality.
“This is a global movement to unlock the power of girls to exercise their freedom to learn, lead, decide and thrive. True gender equality cannot be realised by theory alone. We need practical action like the #GirlsTakeover. The initiative also serves as a reminder to decision makers how badly thousands of girls need role models to get an equal chance in life,” adds Jan Jaap Kleinrensink.
Sapheat, one of the girls who took part in the takeovers in Cambodia, dreams to be a clinic director. She took over the role of a health centre director in her community in 2016. She completed her high school exams and now is preparing to start further education so she can follow her dream.
“I am so thrilled to taking the role as a director of the health centre. It was like my dream coming true,” she says.
Plan International Cambodia’s honorary ambassador VJ Nana herself has set profound footprints for girls as a radio producer, television anchor, youth representative, social media activist, and more.
“Dare to dream. It's not important if your dream is understood. And be persistent. We have at least 10 times more potential than we think,” she says.
As honorary ambassador of Plan International Cambodia, VJ Nana will visit grassroots activities of the organisation and partners, using her talent to inspire children and youth to take the lead in their lives and communities.
