Plan International Mozambique campaigns support girls’ return to school

Plan International Mozambique in partnership with UNICEF and MEPT – Movimento de Educação para Todos – has launched 2 campaigns entitled “Back to My Future” and “Safe Return to School.”

The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Mozambique on 22 March 2020. As a measure against the spread of the virus, the Mozambican government issued orders to close schools, forcing more than 8 million students at all levels to stay home or adapt to distance learning modalities.

For many children without internet access, school closures have resulted in a pause in their education, further hindering their opportunities to thrive in the future. 

Back to school

It is not enough to call for the return of girls, it is necessary that this return be done safely.

Exactly 1 year later, face-to-face classes have been allowed to resume, and while many students will be welcomed back to class, the economic and social effects of the coronavirus pandemic have had the greatest impact on the lives of girls (Rapid Gender Needs Assessment, 2020, Plan International Mozambique), diminishing the chances of their return to school.

With this in mind, the Back to My Future and Safe Return to School campaigns aim to mobilise parents, guardians, teachers, girls, and all members of society to help girls safely return to school. 

Support for girls

Plan International Mozambique has been assisting schools, in our project implementation areas, with what is needed to enable safe return to school.

We work to improve the lives of girls and their advancement in education, so they do not have to succumb to child marriages or early pregnancies due to lack of access to education.

“It is not enough to call for the return of girls, it is necessary that this return be done safely. And for this to happen, it is necessary that together, government, civil society and all partners in education each do our part,” said Rosaria Mabica, Plan International Mozambique’s Head of Programmes.
