Plan international El Salvador organized the forum “Unstoppable Women” to support the Global Movement Because I Am a Girl

In the framework of the National and International Day of the Women, Plan International El Salvador organized a forum named “Unstoppable Women” focused on the theme “Women in the changing world of work”.

According to the United Nations the theme for this year was “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”. And it is precisely in the working area where many differences between man and women persist.

In the case of El Salvador there are many inequalities. For example
The Multiple Purpose Household Survey 2015, a statistic instrument that provides information about social and economic situation of Salvadoran families, points that women represent 52.5% of the population, but they also make up the largest group with illiteracy.

Regarding school attendance, boys both children and adolescents go more to school than girls and on the economic area, the 40.6 % of women are part of the economically active population, compared to 59.4% of the population made up of men.

As part of the solution to change this situation, Plan International El Salvador is looking to generate spaces like this forum to continue promoting girls and women rights, and by this, contributing to the construction of a more equitable society.

This is how the Marketing and Communications department looked for different businesses interested women of their staff, participated in this activity where they would get to know leader women and also support the Global Movement Because I Am a Girl, allocating funds for the delivery of scholarships.

The response was positive and we had presence of more than 200 women, who had the chance to listen to great speakers leaders in the business area like: Maria Eugenia Brizuela who is representative for Latin America in the International Board of Plan. In her intervention she emphasized on the subject of “Women in the decision making”.

Another of the speakers was Carmen Aida Muñoz, Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce who centered her message in “The role of the women in the business area”

Also we had the presence of the entrepreneur Ileana Herrera, Commercial Director of Imagine Show Marketing, a company dedicated to event organization. She directed to the participants with the subject “The challenge of entrepreneuring”.

“It is necessary that all sectors of society join together and be determinant to promote gender equality. We thank all companies who invited women of their staff to this forum where besides entertaining them, you have contributed to promote girls education” Rodrigo Bustos, Plan International El Salvador Director.

One of the most important moments of the forum was listening to the testimony of Fátima, a young girl who was supported with a high school scholarship of ¡Because I am a Girl! And thanks to this opportunity she now is studying a technical career at university.

During the forum, besides listening the speeches, the more than 200 guests participated in raffles and personal care sessions like massage, sight exams, blood pressure taking, among others.

Also participants got to know youth entrepreneurs who are supported by Plan and who had the chance to offer their products.

Through this forum, which was a complete success, we were able to gather funds to give 10 scholarships for boys and girls from the rural areas of the country. Also 11 new individual donors added to Plan who committed to give a monthly support to the Because I Am a Girl Global Movement.
