Violence, early pregnancy and forced marriages or unions: Three problems faced by girls in Paraguay.
According to reports from the Public Prosecutor's Office in 2020, more than 2,400 reports of child sexual abuse were received from January to November, in all of 2020 at least 8 minors were victims of child abuse and mistreatment on a daily basis.
Data obtained by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare indicate that girls between 10 and 14 years of age give birth to almost 700 babies a year, approximately 20% of pregnancies occur in girls and adolescents between 15 and 19 years of age. Another alarming figure in the country corresponds to early unions, where 8 out of 10 marriages of women between 15 and 19 years of age take place with men who are much older than them. According to marriage records, a total of 19,660 marriages were registered in 2018, of which, 13% corresponds to the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. For these reasons Plan International works together with families, communities and governments to take immediate action to end violence and change beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that cause harm to girls and young women.
