Located in the central region of Vietnam, Quang Tri Province is an area that is significantly impacted by the tropical monsoon climate. The main source of income is from agriculture and forestry. Plan Vietnam has been working together with children, their families and communities in Quang Tri since 1996.

All Plan Vietnam-supported projects are implemented at grassroot level in partnership with the Commission for Population Family and Children (CPFC), Youth Union, Department of Education & Training, Department of Health, Department of Justice and Agriculture Extension Centre.

Programme highlights

Early childhood care and development

Plan Vietnam arranged for preschool teachers and parents to attend training courses. Teachers learnt how to enhance their teaching methods and received education in nutrition, healthcare and toy-making.

Following the training, they reported they had a better understanding of teaching methodologies that encourage greater child participation. Parents commented that they felt better equipped to provide optimum care for their children.

Quality basic education

Plan Vietnam is supporting training on the school improvement programmes, which emphasise children and parents' participation in the running of schools and child-centered teaching and learning. We also run community courses on topics including child rights, hygienic behaviour and childhood injury and accident prevention.

Community health

To apply the lessons learnt in the ‘safe motherhood' project to other communes, an evaluation of the project's success in Gio Linh district was conducted. The evaluation showed that it was important not only to raise the awareness about safe motherhood in women but also their husbands. Plan Vietnam provided sanitation facilities and training that informed students about personal hygiene behaviors, child-friendly latrines and environmental sanitation.

Sustainable livelihoods

To support communities in their development of more sustainable livelihoods, 344 women received loans this year. Children were encouraged to save through the establishment of 41 child savings' clubs with 1,500 children taking memberships. In addition, 10 demonstration models that support sustainable development were designed and 4,754 metres of inner irrigation canals were upgraded increasing productivity of rice and other crops. Communities have been able to diversify their activities, increase household income and ensure food security. These models will be implemented on a larger scale in the coming years.

Child protection

One of the highlights was the successful implementation of child protection projects. The installation of mobile birth registration units has certified 1,734 unregistered births. A series of training and communications sessions organised with partners, communities and children has enhanced awareness of child protection and a reporting system of child abuse is in place.
