Yagi Storm situation update

Twelve hours after making landfall in the Northwest region of Vietnam, Yagi storm left heavy consequences in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and started to reduce speed after Hai Duong and Ha Noi.

At 7:00 a.m. on September 8, the centre of the tropical storm made landfall in the Northwest region. The strongest wind near the centre of the tropical depression was level 6 (39-49 km/h), gusting to level 7, moving west, with wind speed on land in the Northwest region up to 10-15 km/h. Due to the influence of the circulation of tropical depression, heavy rain continued to occur on September 8th and 9th with common rainfall from 20-50mm, up to 100mm in the Northeast region and Thanh Hoa; meanwhile the Northwest region with common rainfall from 100-200mm, up to 400mm in some places.


The first initial damage report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on September 8 reported 14 deaths, 186 people injured, 3,279 houses damaged, 401 electric pillars fell, resulting in widespread electric cut-off in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong and Ha Noi, 121,500 hectares of rice and other crops flooded or damaged, 1,000 nets of aquaculture damaged or swipe away (in Quang Ninh).


There is no damage report in Plan’s working areas, including the Country Office in Hanoi, and Ha Giang and Lai Chau Programme Units.


Plan International Vietnam is closely monitoring the situation and in coordination with Vietnam Dyke and Disaster Management Authority (VDDMA) and other humanitarian partners through DMWG, Education in Emergency, WASH in Emergency including the start network.


As of now, all Plan staff and sponsor children are safe.
