Digital regional #GirlsTakeover 2023 to eliminate child, early and forced marriage and unions

For the first time using Youth Action Platform, everyone can takeover key leadership positions at Plan International APAC
11 October 2023

In celebration of the International Day of the Girl, Plan International Asia-Pacific has initiated a digital Girls Takeover series with the theme of eliminating child, early and forced marriage and unions in the region. This marks the first regional campaigning activity on its newly launched Youth Action Platform.

Girls Takeover

Since 2012, Plan International has organised Girls Takeovers across the globe, giving girls and young women the chance to take on decision-making and leadership roles, through which they can display their powers and talents while advocating for the rights of other girls and inspiring lasting changes on political, economic, and social levels.

This year, Plan International stands with girls and young women as they call for power holders to play their part in supporting girl activists to create a better world, supporting girl activists around the world speaking up on issues that are important to them and changing their communities for the better.

Plan International regional leadership has invited youth across the Asia-Pacific region to nominate themselves to take over several leading positions in its regional hub. By voicing their ideas and suggestions for fighting against the harmful impacts of child, early and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU) as their takeover manifestos, the youth show how they envision the solutions to a severe problem with adverse impacts on their life and development.

“Starting with the 2023 digital Girls Takeover on the Youth Action Platform, Plan International Asia-Pacific is set to roll out youth-led campaigning activities aimed at eliminating CEFMU and ensuring that girls and young women have the opportunity to reach their full potential and create a better world for all,” said Regional Director Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle.

Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle – Regional Director

Eliminating CEFMU has been a strategic priority of Plan International at different levels. From 2021, Plan Asia and the Pacific has launched various initiatives to highlight its rights-based and gender-transformative commitments and work on reducing and eliminating CEFMU and prevention of adolescent pregnancy. Key priorities in our work include strengthening youth activism, engagement, and involvement to eliminate CEFMU in Asia, engaging traditional and religious leaders, campaigning to prevent and end CEFMU, the use of digital technology, cyber platforms, and online solutions, as well as promoting accessible and quality gender-responsive services.

Youth Action Platform

Digital technologies also constitute a key component of Plan International’s 5-year regional campaign to fight against CEFMU via mobilisation of Asia-Pacific young people to be agents-of-change. Plan International Asia-Pacific has developed a Regional Youth Action Platform, which is a community-led platform with the primary focus on bringing young activists across the region together, sharing available opportunities, and taking collective actions. The platform promises to be a tool to empower young activists across the region through information and knowledge sharing and training, innovate new forms of digital “actions” by allowing users to explore ongoing opportunities, self-nominate or participate, and create their own projects, and connect youth activists from across the region onto the same platform.
