Programme highlights
Child survival and development
In Addis, Plan is implementing programmes to tackle childhood illness, boost safe motherhood, improve youth friendly reproductive health, support community-based health facilities and provide clean water and sanitation facilities.
Currently, we are supporting communities to construct and furnish 3 health posts, 1 health centre, 339 home kitchens, 641 communal latrines, and 10 primary schools. 399 households have already had access to tap water supply. To prevent children from preventable childhood illnesses, infants and children under 1 year of age are regularly vaccinated through the expanded programme of immunisation with coverage reaching 90%.
Quality universal learning for life
Working in close partnership with parent-teacher associations, government education bureaus and a non-governmental organisation partner, our learning programme provides early childhood care and development, as well as developing and supporting primary schools and non-formal and adult education. The capacities of teachers, pre-school committees and parent teacher associations have been enhanced.
The number of trainees in pre-school, primary, Alternative Basic Education (ABE), secondary and adult education has now reached 2,109 ( 31% are female). Several primary school constructions and school rehabilitations have been completed.
Likewise to make children access basic education through the ABE mode of delivery we construct and support centres. This increases the coverage of primary education of the intervention areas to reach up to 91%.
Food and nutrition security
According to Plan’s household survey, 57% of the population is currently unemployed and the overall income generating capacity of households is very low. To improve access to financial services, develop a saving culture and strengthen social cohesion, Plan supports village saving and loan groups through training and other activities for 10,517 members.
Beneficiaries are also given training on urban organic home gardening, which helps families to make additional income and improve family diet.
Child participation and protection
Children need to take part in decisions that affect their lives. Plan Ethiopia encourages child participation in almost every element of our project cycle management. Children’s clubs and other stakeholders are provided training to help them upgrade their skills and increase their participation in child protection issues.
HIV and AIDS
Plan works with communities on HIV and AIDS preventions. Awareness-raising activities are supported with economic assistance to empower people living with the virus and orphans and vulnerable children. Currently, 300 community members are being supported including children living with the virus.
