It's with great sorrow that Plan International received the devastating news about the fatal shooting on the 29 July that led to the death of at least 5 high-school children and a high number of serious injuries in El Obeid, North Kordofan.
Keep children out of harm's way
The children, aged between 15 and 17 years, were protesting the commencement of the school year amid the political uncertainty in Sudan. Children’s right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly is enshrined in international law.
Our thoughts go out to the families, the students and the community in El Obeid as we urge all parties to protect children and to make sure they are kept out of harm’s way. This in line with the commitments under the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Sudan Child Act 2010.
Hold perpetrators to account
Plan International calls on the government to investigate and hold all perpetrators of violence against children accountable.
Plan International has been working in Sudan since 1977 and continues to work with national partners and the international community to support vulnerable children and young people to reach their potential in safe communities that respect their rights and gender equality.
