What is Behind the Scenes?
The comic book Behind the Scenes is a unique initiative of a collection of comics that brings to light the mental health challenges faced by girls in the Arab region. Through real-life stories, the comic highlights pressures such as societal expectations, academic stress, personal struggles, and resilience. By amplifying their voices, the comic book serves as both a creative expression and a tool for raising awareness about mental health.
This collection of short stories turned into comics were created to address the psychological pressures that girls face. These stories, told by young girls and women across the region, delve into issues like trauma, perfectionism, early marriage, and academic struggles. The comic book highlights how art and storytelling can foster healing, self-expression, and advocacy.
Who created it?
The stories in this comic book represent the lived experiences of girls and young women from diverse backgrounds. Both the contributors who shared their narratives and the artist who brought these stories to life through illustrations were girls, making this comic book a true product of the creativity, resilience, and voices of young women from the region.
With support from Plan International, this initiative highlights the power of girls telling their own stories to address critical mental health challenges and inspire change. This collection of short stories were collected as part of the Plan International “She Leads” project’s mental health initiative.
Why does it matter?
Mental health remains a sensitive and often overlooked topic. Behind the Scenes aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health, inspire dialogue, and encourage support for girls and young women navigating these challenges.
