Support for vulnerable women during COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Plan International Ghana supported vulnerable women’s menstrual health, safety and ability to earn an income.

Plan International and partners support vulnerable girls with relief items during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To reduce the effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable girls in Accra including kayayei (porters in street markets), Plan International Ghana, has distributed reusable sanitary pads, face masks and hand sanitisers.

In collaboration with partner organisations Days for Girls, and Zongo Girls for Education we have also trained women to create reusable sanitary pads, face masks and backpacks to enable them to support their communities and earn extra income.

The project also helped them to learn about menstrual hygiene and sexual and reproductive health rights. The young women who took part in the project were from vulnerable areas of Accra.

COVID-19-affected women supported

Ms. Abigail Nana Ama Sogah, a fellow of Plan International Ghana Alumni Network, said the project helped keep vulnerable women safe during the pandemic. “At the end of the exercise, we want to make sure that all vulnerable girls, especially the kayaye, are safe from COVID-19, and that they are free from any form of abuse,” she said.

Plan International Ghana also donated GH¢70,000 (€5,300) to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund and to the Gender Ministry to support vulnerable people, especially during the partial lockdown period.

Ms. Isabella Akwaboah, an Advocate and Enterprise Leader at Days for Girls, advised the beneficiaries to practice good menstrual hygiene and work hard to support themselves.

“Fortunately, these sanitary pads can last for 4 years. Try to wash it well after every use. If you can afford it, apply some disinfectant when washing, and iron before reusing,” she advised.
