Kissidougou is a prefecture in the South-East of Guinea and is home to 4 main ethnic groups: Kissi, Lele, Kuranko and Maninko. Almost 90% of the population makes a living from traditional agriculture and the other 10% lives on small businesses.
Since 1997, Plan Guinea has been working in Kissidougou with children, their families and communities to increase awareness of children’s rights and ensure they are protected.
All Plan Guinea-supported programmes and projects are carried out in close partnership with government administration departments.
Programme highlights
Child health and survival
Plan Guinea has been building health posts and centres in Kissidougou to make healthcare more accessible to rural populations, and equipping them with tools and medicine.
We have also trained and paid community health agents, supported campaigns to increase awareness on HIV and AIDS and tobacco addiction, and organised workshops for Kissidougou’s health department on national health policy.
Education and development
Plan Guinea trains teachers and provides grants to help them give classes in schools that suffer from a lack of teachers.
We have also helped communities build public and private primary and secondary schools and have provided them with textbooks, furniture and learning materials.
Child participation and protection
To help protect children and give them the opportunity to actively participate in decisions which affect their lives, Plan Guinea focuses its activities on:
- ‘Kids Waves’ radio campaigns to promote children’s rights
- organising children’s workshops, which give them the opportunity to discuss female genital mutilation and learn about its consequences
- promoting children’s art and crafts to foster creativity and cultural awareness, which are exhibited in the town museum in Kissidougou.
Governance and local civil society development
Increasing communities’ capacity is one of Plan Guinea’s priorities in Kissidougou. We continue to train community leaders so that they understand the responsibility of communities and towns, and can manage water facilities and public health centres.
We support villages to set up committees to protect their forests and encourage replanting by helping them understand the laws that govern natural resources. We also promote fundraising and saving.
