Rapid needs assessment after Tana River flooding

Cover page of needs assessment report.

Flooding of the Tana River Delta has caused widespread destruction of farms, infrastructure and property, leaving thousands of families displaced. Plan International Kenya’s Emergency Response Team carried out a rapid needs assessment to identify the top priority needs of those affected.

The rising water levels in the Tana River Delta presented an immediate flooding threat to more than 2,000 households, following the heavy rains which were enhanced within the first week of November 2023 in Tana River County. The rise in water levels in River Tana led to flooding of river banks which destroyed farms, displaced families, damaged infrastructure and properties.

More than 60 people have died and an estimated 136,025 people (27,205 households) were displaced due to flooding in the country as of 19 November 2023, according to government authorities.

Plan International Kenya Emergency Response Team carried out the first-response activities to provide an initial overview of the situation in a bid to enable immediate identification of top priorities, needs, vulnerabilities and capacities of girls, boys, women and men.
