Rapid needs assessment in Marsabit

This report examines the needs of people affected by El Nino rains in November 2023 in Marsabit, Kenya.

The ongoing El Nino rains have caused severe road damage especially in areas not connected with tarmac in Marsabit, Kenya. Flooding has led to substantial road cuts in almost every region rendering them inaccessible.

Plan International Kenya’s Emergency Response Team conducted needs assessments in areas affected by floods in Laisamis Sub County, Marsabit. Participatory approaches were used to assess the needs of the following groups:

  • Girls between 9 and 13 years old
  • Young people between 18 and 24 years old
  • Male and female adults
  • Persons with disabilities

Key informant interviews were also held with key stakeholders including the National Drought Management Authority Officers, Deputy County Commissioners, County Executive Officer responsible for disaster risk management and community elders.
