Wiyaala spoke at length about how teenage pregnancy can result in girls dropping out of school. She also encouraged the young people to stay clear of illegal drugs and focus on working towards positive futures.
She spoke passionately about the importance of education and how it is the most powerful tool children can use to change their lives. She also thanked teachers for the important role they play and reinforced her commitment to girls’ education.
The successful artist also performed at each of the schools during her visits and gave guitar lessons to some of the students.
Plan International Ghana is appreciative of Wiyaala’s total commitment and passion for supporting the education and empowerment of rural girls. Feedback from community members, teachers, students and other stakeholders has been very positive about the impact of the project on girls’ lives so far.
Support for girls’ education
Calender 4 Change is a project run by the youth-led NGO, Necessary Aid Alliance, and funded by Plan International Ghana. This year-long visual communication and mentorship project works to shift the mindset of teenage girls in rural communities by linking them up with role models and mentors who support them to follow their ambitions.
The goal of this project is to support girls to dream big, follow their ambitions and not limit themselves because of stereotypes around what women are capable of. Necessary Aid Alliance has engaged in a rigorous search for suitable role models for for this project. Alongside Wiyaala, other role models are revered in their fields of expertise and provide a positive example and influence on the teenage girls.
