Throughout its 25 years of operations, Plan International Uganda’s strategy and response has evolved alongside the context in the country and children’s lived realities to remain relevant and impactful.
Initially, our operations started purely as a relief programme responding to the 5-year guerrilla war that had affected the country. As a result of the conflict, there was a lack of health centres, schools, water sources and child protection structures.
Hundreds of children were orphaned and others were left under the care of aging grandparents. In addition, many children were involved in child labour to help their families make ends meet.
Decades of growth
Over the next 2 decades, we continued to grow and expand to other regions across the country, adopting an approach based on strengthening community participation, sustainable development, and government influencing.
Over the past 25 years, Plan International Uganda has delivered multi-sectoral programmes in communities that have left a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of children in many areas, including protection, education, water, hygiene and sanitation, economic security, health, disaster risk management, participation and governance.
During this time we have directly reached over 5 million children.
Reaching out to more vulnerable children
Last year we launched our new country strategy which is designed to reach out to thousands more vulnerable children with high quality programmes.
In order to achieve our strategy over the course of the next 5 years, we will expand our areas of work to West Nile, Karamoja, Eastern and East Central Buyende.
Partnerships
We recognise the value and importance of partnerships in reaching our ambitious targets. The contributions of funders, sponsors, the government, local partners and colleagues within Plan International are essential as we address the issues facing Ugandan communities and we will seek to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones to make that a reality over the coming years.
