This report describes the results of a primary qualitative research study on 2 Plan International-supported maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) programmes with male engagement components in Bangladesh, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

The research, conducted by the the Burnet Institute, sought to investigate the relationship between male engagement and MNCH outcomes; identify effective strategies to engage men in MNCH; and pinpoint the factors and conditions necessary to ensure sustained male engagement in MNCH.

Community members participating in the research study identified many direct and indirect benefits associated with male engagement in MNCH. The study also confirmed and added to several elements of good practice in male engagement programming that have been previously recognised, and can usefully guide policymakers and programme planners who aim to increase male engagement in MNCH.
