Plan International works together with children, young people, supporters, and partners to strive for a just world, where we are all equal.
Since August 2022, we’ve worked in Ukraine to deliver immediate humanitarian aid to children and their families affected by the war that has caused thousands of civilian casualties, widespread destruction and has forced millions to flee their homes.
In 2025, an estimated 12.7 million people in Ukraine will need humanitarian assistance, including almost 2 million children. This includes 2.8 million IDPs and 9.9 million non-displaced people who are severely affected by the war, including returnees.
We work alongside Ukraine’s strong civil society organisations focusing on internally displaced persons, in particular children, youth and minority groups.
In cooperation with 8 local partners inside Ukraine, we provide the direct life-saving humanitarian assistance including non-food items, multi-purpose cash, winter kits and recovery support.
Our projects also focus on expanding the availability of mental health and psychosocial support services both for children and their parents. We ensure the continuation of quality formal and alternative education and learning, especially in the near frontline regions of the country.
Nearly one million children and 40,000 teachers affected by the destruction of schools have benefited from online and hybrid learning models, temporary learning spaces and educational materials to ensure continuity of education.
Moreover, we continue working with and through local organisations to support children’s rights and equality for girls in Ukraine, as well as promoting gender equality.
Through our humanitarian response, Plan International’s Ukraine Response has reached over 200,000 people inside of Ukraine, including 52,000 people with emergency humanitarian assistance with a gender-responsive and transformative approach at its core. Of these, 63,000 are girls and 58,000 are boys. In our programme countries of Poland, Romania and Moldova, we have reached a further 670,000 people, including 125,000 girls and 95,000 boys.

Our work in Ukraine is part of a regional response to the Ukraine crisis which also includes programmes in Poland, Moldova and Romania.
