Children’s education has been boosted for South Sudanese children in Ugandan refugee camps thanks to the distribution of 4,000 ‘schools in a bag‘.
Over 4,000 South Sudanese refugee children in Uganda have received school supplies thanks to a UK based funder and Plan International Uganda’s commitment to support children’s access to quality education. The children based in the Adjumani, Bidibidi and Rhino refugee camps, received exercise books, pens and books packaged in a red bag.
Betty Masudio, a parent of one of the children in Adjumani camp said the ‘school in a bag’ will help improve her child’s studying. “I did not have money to buy these materials. The little money I make is used for buying food for my family,” she says.
Keeping children in school
Jessica Ilomu, National Programme Manager at Plan International says the initiative will encourage parents to enrol their children in school and support their education. “Some parents have been marrying off the little girls in the local markets or send them to the lake for fishing. The parents have been briefed on the value of education and have now enrolled the girls at school,”
“The parents are also now ready to play their role to ensure these children remain in school.” says Jessica.
Richard Chandiga, a head teacher at a primary school that has benefited from the distribution of supplies says that previously, the children would hold books in their hands and the books would soon get torn or get lost. “With this donation, the materials will be kept safely and each child will identify his or her bag with the serial number on that bag,” he says.
