Youth leaders gather to shape Timor-Leste’s future

21 February 2025

The 'Youth’s Vision for the Future' event brought together 100 young leaders, including individuals with disabilities, to reflect on their aspirations and discuss their vital role in the nation’s development.

This event and discussion was hosted by Plan International Timor-Leste, in collaboration with Ambassador for Youth in all Diversity, Kay Olok, and as a patron of the Xanana Reading Room.

Youth leadership and dialogue

The discussion served as a platform for young people to be heard; enabling them to drive positive societal change by shaping attitudes, behaviours, and perceptions so that young people can actively participate in Timor-Leste’s growth and progress. It is important for young leaders to be equipped with the right tools to contribute meaningfully to our country’s development.

A key highlight of the event was the emphasis on youth-government engagement, facilitated by Kay Olok . He encouraged direct dialogue between young leaders and government representatives, ensuring that youth voices are heard and considered in national decision-making. “The involvement of youth in governance is crucial for the future of Timor-Leste,” he stated.

Key objectives of the discussion

“To the youth: always accept and embrace the opportunities you receive, and remember that the challenges in the world should never limit your growth and development.”

This event aimed to empower young people to take the lead in shaping the nation’s future, focusing on equality and sustainable development.

“To the youth: always accept and embrace the opportunities you receive, and remember that the challenges in the world should never limit your growth and development,” said Kay Olok.

The main goals of this discussion were to unite youth perspectives, enhance youth-government dialogue, and promote actionable change. We encourage participants to think critically, advocate for inclusive and sustainable development, and take leadership roles in promoting gender equality, ending violence, and preventing early marriage and pregnancy.

A step toward a brighter future through continued collaboration

As part of their ongoing commitment to youth empowerment, Plan Timor-Leste and Kay Olok signed a memorandum of understanding to extend their partnership for 3 more years. This renewed collaboration ensures the continuation of programmes that foster youth leadership, encourage dialogue, and support youth-driven initiatives for national development. “This partnership will continue to empower young leaders in Timor-Leste,” said a Plan International Representative.

The discussion reinforced the importance of youth engagement in shaping Timor-Leste’s future. As Plan Timor-Leste and Kay Olok continue their mission, similar dialogues and collaborative efforts will remain key to ensuring that Timor-Leste’s youth are not only heard but actively involved in building a stronger, more progressive nation.
