Education in Timor-Leste

Ensuring all children receive a quality education.

All children under the age of six, particularly those from vulnerable groups, have a right to quality early education and stimulation. Our Education Programme has three key components:

  • Early Childhood Care Development (ECCD)
  • Inclusive Education
  • Basic Education

Plan International is focused on promoting inclusive, safe, healthy, child-friendly learning environments and improving the skills of parents and teachers to contribute to the development of children in Timor-Leste.

We are supporting Timorese children to have the best start in life possible through community pre-schools, parenting education classes and by providing nutritious food through supplementary feeding at schools. Between 2012 – 2014 Plan’s ECCD programme has reached more than 7,000 people, including more than 3,400 children.

We currently supports 29 community pre-schools in 20 villages in Aileu District, which prepare young students to enter primary school with improved literacy, numeracy and social skills. At these pre-schools children are provided with nutritious food to help them grow and to improve their concentration in class.

Inclusive Education is a new approach in Timor-Leste, and Plan International supports children with disabilities to attend school by improving infrastructure, such as by building ramps, providing appropriate teaching and learning resources and training teachers to more effectively teach disabled students.
