Let’s go further. Let’s go faster!

21 October 2025

As we mark International Day of the Girl this year, let's all be reminded of our shared responsibility to amplify girls' voices to break the silence and to dismantle the harmful practices that limit girls' future, says 21-year-old Hellen, a youth activist.

Girls are not just survivors of crisis, we are leaders of change. Across the globe, we are confronting climate emergencies, conflict, displacement and inequality and yet we are rising – challenging norms, breaking down barriers and leading our communities with courage, strength and vision.

But while celebrating our resilience, we also acknowledge the very real obstacles many of us still face – stigma and silence around health and menstruation, child marriage, limited access to safe and quality education among others. These are not just challenges, they are injustices. They are real and urgent and hold us back from realising our full potential.

These are not just challenges, they are injustices holding us back.

This year, as we mark the International day of the Girl, my asks are simple.

1. To the policy makers

Girls don’t need symbolic support. We need structural change. Policy makers need to move beyond promises and deliver policies that protect our rights, ensure access to education and healthcare and help end this cancer that is child marriage.

We are telling you what we need – are you listening? And if you are listening, are you acting?

Supporting and investing in girls is not charity. It is one of the most transformative decisions any society can make. Support that reaches girls, especially those in crisis, does more than change individual lives. It lifts families, strengthens communities and drives long-term development. Thank you for the investments you’ve made so far. Let’s go further. Let’s go faster.

Supporting and investing in girls is not charity.

2. To the media

The world sees what you show.

Girls need more than just headlines – we need our realities told with dignity and our voices amplified with truth. Help change the narrative. Showcase girls not just as victims of crisis but as leaders of change.

3. To girls across the world

When girls lead, change follows. So lets commit, together, to a world where girls can rise, speak, lead and thrive. Our story, our voice and our leadership matter.

We are not defined by what we have been through but by the strength of which we rise. Whether we are leading in our communities, speaking up in classrooms or simply refusing to stay silent.

When girls lead, change follows

We are powerful. Let’s keep going. The world believes in us and will stand beside us.

Not someday. Now.
