Our funding

Our vision and life-changing work in the region to advance children’s rights and equality for girls has remained possible thanks to our many supporters and partners, both individual, corporate and institutional. Without that support and combined expertise, we would be unable to support lasting changes for children and communities.

In Kibera, an informal slum settlement in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, the Obuto savings group has been trained by Plan International and Horn of Africa. The women’s group meet once a week to save a portion of their earnings. They also pay into a social fund which is set aside for members in case of emergencies such as sickness, death and fire. © Plan International /Zinduka International

How we raise our funds

The region’s income projection between 2021 and 2028 is 1.06 billion euros.

We have 2 main income sources: child sponsorship and grants (donations from institutions and corporate donors) The remaining funds come from other sources such as disaster appeals.

How we invest our funds

Our top 3 thematic priorities  – protection from violence, sexual reproductive health and rights and skills and opportunities for youth employment and empowerment take up half of the total budget.

Of our 16 countries, Ethiopia holds the biggest share of this projection at 119 million euros (which is 12% ) while South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Kenya together hold 432 million euros – about 42%

For our top 3 thematic priorities:

  • Ethiopia and Kenya use 34% of their total country budget (63 million euros) for protection from violence projects and activities.
  • Kenya and Zimbabwe use 36% of their total country budget (55 million euros) for sexual and reproductive health projects and activities.
  • Tanzania and Zimbabwe use 36% of their total country budget (60 million euros) for their skills and opportunities for youth employment and empowerment projects and activities.
  • South Sudan on the other hand uses up 84% of their total country budget (94 million euros) for food security and livelihoods.
