Plan International calls for the strengthening of protection policies following the death of six migrants in Chiapas at the hands of the Mexican Army

On the night of October 1, a group of 33 migrants of different nationalities had a tragic encounter with a Mexican Army patrol in Chiapas [ADD ,Southern Mexico]. As a result, six people on the move lost their lives and 12 others were injured. This unfortunate event underscores the extreme vulnerability of people in transit in Mexico, who are forced to risk their lives in search of a better future.

The Mexican Army is conducting an investigation into the incident. However, it is essential that the investigation be rigorous, thorough and transparent, in order to clarify the facts and ensure that the necessary measures are taken to prevent similar situations from recurring.

Plan International urgently calls on all parties involved to join efforts to strengthen policies for the protection of people in mobility. It is essential to implement measures that ensure the dignity and safety of those seeking refuge and opportunities in Mexico, promoting humane and respectful treatment at all times. Migration policies must prioritize life and safety, preventing migrants from being victims of violence and abuse.

Plan International reiterates its commitment to the protection of children and adolescents in situations of mobility. We will continue working on projects and actions aimed at benefiting and protecting this population, promoting an environment in which their rights are respected and guaranteed.
