Djeneba: Stitching a brighter future in Mali

Despite the challenges related to youth employment in her community, Djeneba found ways to develop her dream business and is an example for young people.

In Mali, 35-year-old Djeneba is deftly working on a traditional wax-printed skirt for one of her customers, the steady hum of her sewing machine reverberates around her sewing workshop. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination in a country grappling with youth unemployment and economic challenges.

Djeneba’s journey to success began with a vocational training course, during which she honed her sewing skills. She received a start-up kit containing a sewing machine, table, iron, scissors and other tools, as well as business management training. Armed with these resources, she opened her workshop 2 years ago, creating a space where creativity and opportunity flourish.

Youth unemployment, a pressing issue in Mali

In Mali, where almost half of the population is under the age of 18, youth unemployment is a pressing issue. The labour market struggles to absorb the growing number of young people, particularly in rural areas where access to education and training is limited. The country has been further destabilised by economic and political crises, pushing some young people towards migration or, in extreme cases, towards violence and radicalisation.

“Education enables [girls] to learn, understand their rights, and participate in community development.”

Before joining the vocational training programme, Djeneba faced significant hurdles: a lack of proper equipment and limited financial management knowledge. She used the start-up kit and financial training from the training programme to change this. Now, she carefully divides her profits, putting half into a savings account and using the rest to support her family.

“This support has really changed my life,” she shares. “I am now able to meet my own daily needs and help others. I contribute significantly to covering family expenses, particularly my daughters’ needs, like school fees, hair braids, games, and shoes.”

Her workshop is not just a business; it’s also a symbol of her commitment to her community and her children’s future. A passionate advocate for girls’ education, she believes it is essential for empowering vulnerable voices.

“The education of children, especially girls, is crucial because they are among the most vulnerable in our society,” she explains. “Education enables them to learn, understand their rights, and participate in community development.” As a mother, sister and daughter herself, Djénéba believes that women are vital to achieving a balanced society and play key roles in family and community development.

Djeneba has a strong ambition for her community

Today, she employs 8 young apprentices, creating a positive and supportive work environment. “My employees and I have a friendly working relationship based on mutual respect, and they see me as a good employer,” she says proudly, emphasising the importance of trust within her team.

Her ambitions extend beyond her current success. She dreams of expanding her workshop and opening an accessories shop to increase her income. She envisages herself as a respected community leader, renowned for her dedication and strong leadership skills. “I want my community to see me as a committed and respectful young woman,” she says, her voice brimming with determination.

Her workshop, filled with the rhythmic clatter of sewing machines and the laughter of her apprentices, is a hub of hope and opportunity.
