Adolescent girls in crisis: Voices from the Venezuelan migration in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru is part of Plan International’s ‘Girls in Crisis’ global research series.

This investigation looks at girls’ and adolescents’ experiences in the context of the humanitarian crisis, as a result of the growing Venezuelan migration in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, highlighting their experiences, voices, critical situations and needs from a feminist, intersectional and human rights perspective.

The investigation was carried out with 452 girls and adolescents aged 10-19 years, interviewed via telephone between October 2020 and February 2021. Also, Interviews were carried out with 134 adolescents aged 15-19 and 46 caregivers (93% female).

When I first entered school, they called me ‘veneca’ (a derogatory way of referring to Venezuelan migrant people. It has a very strong sexual connotation for girls, treating them as they are prostitutes). They bullied me for being a starving person.”
