Joint advocacy brief: Protection is paramount for more than 470,000 refugees in Cameroon
For World Refugee Day, in solidarity with refugees and for a world where refugees are welcomed, the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Danish Refugee Council, Plan International, Catholic Relief Services, Care International and Action Against Hunger are drawing stakeholders' attention to the refugee situation in Cameroon.
Background
Cameroon, once lauded for its relative stability, faces multiple complex and deepening crises today. These include the violence perpetrated by non-state armed groups in the Far North region, in the Northwest and Southwest regions and turmoil along its porous border with the Central African Republic.
These prolonged conflicts have left close to 3.4 million people in dire need of assistance and protection. These include refugees, internally displaced persons, returnees and asylum seekers.
Despite efforts by the Government, humanitarian and development actors, there are growing concerns for the country’s refugees and internally displaced persons caught up in the second world’s most neglected displacement crisis.
Recommendations
Together with our partners, we are calling on:
- The international community to increase its support for legal aid to refugees.
- Humanitarian donors to recognise and support the integration of housing, land and property emergency responses from the onset.
- Government to implement concrete actions to ensure the right to durable solutions both for refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.
- Government to ensure that all civil status centres are well equipped to provide timely and quality services.
- Donors should increase their multiyear financing for refugee response in Cameroon.
