Plan International’s African Union Liaison and Pan Africa Programme Office advocates for policies and fair practices that reflect, respond to, promote and protect children’s rights in Africa.
Drawing on Plan International’s continent-wide programming and in collaboration with partners, the office engages with key African human rights bodies such as the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) and the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) to strengthen and protect children’s rights across Africa.
The AU Liaison Office conducts its entire work in close collaboration with the African Union Commission, the Department of Social Affairs, International organisations and UN agencies.
Our key focus areas
The work of the Plan International AU Liaison and Pan Africa Programme Office covers four key areas:
Child Rights Governance and Monitoring
The office advocates for and contributes to the strengthening of systems that promote and protect the rights of children, including supporting the agenda of the oversight institutions mandated with ensuring their realisation.
Plan International’s engagement with the African Union contributes to the significant reduction of incidences of violence against children and young people in Africa in both emergency and non-emergency situations. The Office seeks to support and monitor pan-African institutions and national processes, such as Plan International’s recent support to the Department of Social Affairs (DSA) to launch the Continental Campaign to End Child Marriage in Burkina Faso, Mali and Ethiopia.
Plan International’s Child-Centred Community Development approach places child participation at the heart of our work. In Geneva, we work to ensure that children are empowered to play an active role as rights holders and that their voices are heard and taken into account as part of the UN agenda.
Youth Employability and Empowerment
As well as representing these key issues to senior African Union members and policymakers, the office works to implement the AU Youth Charter and the Youth Decade Plan of Action and other commitment of its members to youth employability and empowerment.
