Plan International started working in Myanmar in 2008 in response to Cyclone Nargis. We now work in over 225 communities and have around 200 staff members. Children and their rights are at the centre of everything we do.

We implement projects in 5 states in Myanmar – Rakhine, Mandalay, Kachin, Ayeyarwaddy and Yangon – and currently support 2 ongoing emergency responses in Rakhine State and Kachin.

Our current priorities are:

  • Early childhood care and development with an emphasis on educating parents and preparing children for school.
  • Maternal, newborn and child health, focusing on pregnant and lactating women and the first 1000 days of a child’s life.
  • Improving handwashing behaviours, access to clean water and creating open defecation-free communities.
  • Supporting young people to learn to the skills and gain the experience required to secure decent work and contribute to the development of their communities.
  • Building resilient communities, safe schools and preparing for and responding to emergencies.
  • Supporting communities to prevent child abuse.
