Economic Empowerment in Zambia

Improving economic status and vocational skills of young people

Through innovative and sustainable approaches, Plan International helps youth and communities to gain skills in agriculture, establishing savings and loan schemes, and providing business training - including food processing and preservation

Our key goals in this programme area are:

  • Improving the economic status of youths and caregivers (parents and guardians)
  • Increasing access to relevant life and vocational skills for youth

The success of our Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) groups continues to expand, from a total membership of 12,696 in 2013 to 16,989 in 2014.

We have created exclusive savings groups specifically for youth called YSLA and comprising of 10,321 youths.  Our staff  have also trained the groups in financial education and business skills allowing them to establish successful small businesses.
