Youth economic empowerment in El Salvador

This programme funded by the European Commission aims at building capacity and economic opportunities for young people, especially young women, by developing and providing innovative services to facilitate youth capacity building and empowerment to find a job or start a new business. Wendy was one of the young people who started a business after taking part in this project.

Wendy's story

24-year-old Wendy lives in Los Palacios Canton in Cuscatlán with her mother, younger sister and cousins. She graduated from High School with a degree in commercial secretariat but could not find a job, due to the lack of experience. She then started helping her mother with housechores and taking care of her sister and cousins.

when we do things on our own, there is little support

“I don’t like how little opportunities that we have as young women in the country, and when we do things on our own, there is little support. I would like there to be more employment opportunities in the area - here you only live from agriculture which is poorly paid, a day labouring earns very little for the great effort made,” she says.

After finding out about Plan International El Salvador’s Youth Economic Empowerment Project, Wendy applied to be part of it. Her application was approved and today Wendy is a member of the young women’s association, where they create products and share marketing and selling ideas for the products they have created.

“I have met many people who have helped me a lot. I actually did not believe this was possible, but I am living evidence that it can happen. I am also willing to help others as far as I can as that was the kind of support I received myself and I will do the same thing for other people.”
