Household economic security in Tanzania

Empowering youth through financial training and savings

Plan International Tanzania’s economic security programme focuses on improving young people’s capacity and access to financial services and financial literacy at community level through appropriate community-based strategies. We empower young people with employability skills, so that they can find jobs or start their own businesses, and link women to training on entrepreneurship and business skills, leading to enhanced employment opportunities, increased income and more support for their family.

Young people are also given the opportunity to join specifically adapted Savings and Loans Youth Associations known as YSLA. There are now 501 of these groups, with 12,068 members. The YSLAs also help the poor and vulnerable children in their communities by providing school materials such as school uniforms, exercise books, and pens and school fees, as well as food, clothes and school supplies for orphans and widows.
